Factory shop fenced off ahead of demolition

Fencing has been placed around a former factory shop in Kirkby-in-Ashfield ahead of its demolition.

The site in Ellis Street will be knocked down by the end of October and will make way for 18 new apartments and commercial units.

The new development will form part of the wider £14m North Kirkby Gateway scheme, which aims to create new homes and commercial units in the Pond Hole area of the town.

The authority said the project is one of 21 funded by its combined £70m Towns Fund and Future High Streets Fund.

Matthew Relf, executive lead for growth, regeneration and local planning at the council, previously said the site had become an eyesore.

"The North Kirkby Gateway project will bring a wonderful new building looking out across the plaza, bringing new commercial and residential spaces right into our town centre," Relf added.

"This will help increase footfall in the town centre and help frame the plaza, bringing more buzz and activity back to Kirkby."

The council will also build 55 retirement and care units as part of the project on the derelict Pond Hole site.
