An amusement arcade has been destroyed in a fire that broke out on Boxing Day.

Emergency services were called to Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, in South Shields, on Friday shortly before 19:00 GMT, following reports of a fire.

No one was injured in the blaze, which badly damaged the arcade near the Dinosaur Cove attraction.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) said six fire engines and specialist appliances were sent to the scene and the fire was extinguished by 03:30 GMT on Saturday.

"We will be supporting partners with the investigation into the incident but at this time we cannot confirm a cause," a TWFRS spokesperson said.

A North East Ambulance Service crew was sent to the scene on Sea Road but was stood down by the fire service.

Northumbria Police placed a cordon around the building and said a report would be sent to the Health and Safety Executive for consideration.

The force said the fire was not being treated as "malicious".
