Bridge wrecked by lorry to stay shut to vehicles

The bridge will stay shut to vehicles into next week

A village bridge damaged after a lorry was driven into it will remain closed to vehicles until at least early next week.

The lorry hit and smashed over one side of the brick bridge in Church Road, Swallowfield, on Wednesday.

A Wokingham Council spokesperson said the high level of the River Blackwater, which flows underneath the bridge, has meant its teams have been unable to assess the structure. They will try again in the coming days.

Diversions remain in place for vehicles but a footpath for pedestrians has been installed on the side of the bridge that was left undamaged.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson confirmed on Friday that no one has been arrested.
