A new pharmacy will open after the closure of two premises left a town with a "critical gap" in healthcare.

Allied Pharmacy will open on 9 March in Wellington, Somerset, in the former base of the Jhoots outlet on Mantle Street.

Last year, Jhoots closed its doors, while the pharmacy in Boots shut in 2024, leaving the town with just two pharmacies. In November, it was announced Allied Pharmacies had taken over 60 Jhoots stores across the UK.

The town's Liberal Democrat MP, Gideon Amos said he was "delighted" to see a new site open in Wellington.

Amos added: "Wellington has been without adequate pharmacy provision since both Jhoots and Boots at the medical centre closed their doors.

"Following those closures, I've challenged assessments suggesting there was no need for more pharmacy provision, have held repeated discussions with NHS Somerset and met with, and written in support of, a range of pharmacy companies to back several potential new providers.

"I'm delighted that work with Allied Pharmacies has now paid off and it's great news that I will now be able to conduct the opening of this much needed pharmacy for the town."
