Priorities set to support 'extraordinary' carers

A review included feedback from families and community groups

Five key priorities have been set out in a bid to improve support for carers, the Government of Jersey has announced.

It follows an urgent review and feedback from families and community groups.

Plans include creating a full directory of services from government and local groups, producing a leaflet and website with clear guidance and contacts and hosting a Connect Me Carers event to link carers with support providers.

Minister for Social Security Deputy Lyndsay Feltham said she was "committed to making sure they have the right support in place, focusing on where it's needed the most".

The priorities also include a communications campaign to keep carers informed and ministers are exploring setting up a dedicated adviser to offer help in person, by phone or email.

The review also looked at financial support.

Current help includes income support for low-income households and weekly payments such as £71.61 for Carer's Allowance, £31.29 for ancillary care costs, and up to £198.03 for personal care.

Home Carer's Allowance provides £295.75 per week under the Social Security Scheme, and long-term care benefits can reach £1,451.13 per week for care costs.

Ms Feltham said: "Carers make an extraordinary contribution to our island.

"I want to reassure carers and their families that I am committed to making sure they have the right support in place, focusing on where it's needed the most.

"This work is the beginning and will continue to expand over the coming months."

A summary report is due in January 2026.
