Temporary planters and road markings in Saturday Market

Five months of roadworks are due to begin in a popular marketplace.

Parking areas and pedestrian access will be improved in Saturday Market, Beverley, as part of a £530,000 project funded by the Department for Transport.

Block paving will be replaced to provide clear markings for parking bays, East Riding of Yorkshire Council said. York stone slabs will be laid in the pedestrian area.

The work will begin on Monday and is due to be completed by 10 June. Some parts of the marketplace will be closed at times for safety reasons, but access to businesses and properties will be maintained.

As part of the work, new seating, bollards and planters will be installed.

Access for people with limited mobility will be improved and disabled parking spaces rearranged to improve visibility for drivers.

Saturday Market was reorganised in May 2024, but the parking area is currently laid out with temporary markings and planters.

At the time, the changes led to a backlash from some motorists, who complained of a confusing layout.

Councillor Paul West, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "This is a positive scheme to improve Beverley for residents, businesses and visitors.

"We thank residents and businesses for their patience during this time and look forward to seeing the project completed in time for the summer."
