Firefighters trudged through half a mile of snow in the dark to deal with a chimney fire.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said a crew from Ellesmere was was called to a house near Oswestry at 22:33 GMT on Sunday and access was "extremely challenging".

Once they arrived, they found the fire had spread from the chimney to a cavity behind and to the floor. More firefighters, from Whitchurch, were able to get there in a four-wheel drive vehicle and crews removed the fire place and floor boards to extinguish the blaze.

Snowfall and freezing conditions caused disruption on the roads across Shropshire on Sunday night and Monday with yellow weather warnings issued.
