A cyclist has been killed in a crash with a car on a main road in Bristol, police have said.

Avon and Somerset Police said the incident happened at about 12:30 GMT on North Street in the south of the city.

"Sadly, despite efforts from members of the public and emergency personnel, a man died at the scene," the force said.

The car involved left the scene, it added, but was tracked down and a man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

North Street remains closed at the scene of the crash while investigation work is carried out.

Police said: "The deceased's next of kin have been notified and a specialist family liaison officer will offer support to them during this incredibly difficult time.

"Our thoughts remain with them."

Anyone who was in the area at the time, or may have dashcam or CCTV footage, has been asked to contact police.
