Pedestrian critically hurt after being hit by car

An 18-year-old man has suffered life-threatening injuries after being hit by a private hire car in Leeds.

West Yorkshire Police said the incident happened on Blenheim Terrace, near the junction with Hillary Place, close to the University of Leeds, at 00:15 GMT.

The pedestrian was hit by a silver Toyota Prius and was taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the car, a 55-year-old man from Leeds, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and remains in custody.

A spokesperson for the force said officers were "keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or the circumstances leading up to it, particularly anyone with relevant dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage".
