Recycled plastic bottles, carrier bags and food packaging have been used to build a new footbridge on a popular walking route near Bradford.

The bridge, close to Oxenhope, has replaced an old wooden one, which was rotten.

It has been built using galvanised steel and recycled plastic materials, according to the council.

Alex Ross-Shaw, the council's executive member for regeneration, planning and transport, said: "This innovative choice of material for the replacement bridge provides greater durability and longevity compared to traditional timber."

The bridge forms part of a walk near Leeming Reservoir, close to the hamlet of Leeming.

The council said the previous bridge was in need of replacement as it had started to fall apart.

As well as being sustainable, the materials used to create the new bridge are "highly durable" and "maintenance-free", according to the council's Countryside and Rights of Way team.

Ross-Shaw added: "It ensures that the public can continue to enjoy safe access along this popular right of way and it's encouraging that officers are already receiving positive feedback from residents and stakeholders."
