A man is in a serious condition in hospital after a car in which he was a passenger was found crashed in a ditch in Rutland.

Leicestershire Police said they were called just after 23:30 GMT on Sunday 18 January from a member of the public to report a silver Mercedes had collided into a ditch on the A6003.

It happened between between Uppingham and Corby, near the junction with Stoke Road in Lyddington.

A 19-year-old man who suffered minor injuries was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while above the legal alcohol limit. He has since been released under investigation.

Officers are appealing for information and for witnesses to come forward.

The passenger, 20, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital where he currently remains.

Leicestershire Police said East Midlands Ambulance Service and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene.

The force added the member of the public who called had not been involved in the collision, and the exact time it took place was not known.
