Some business owners in Penzance have said they are frustrated as roadworks in the town have been extended into next year.

Penzance town centre has undergone several changes this year - with new streetscapes and planters installed, as well as more pedestrian crossings - most of which has been completed in time for Christmas.

However, retailers at the other end of the town have been told the work outside their shops, which started in July, will not be finished until the end of February.

Cornwall Council said all works "within the main" of Market Jew Street were complete and opened on time.

Kirsty Stewart-Clarke, who runs a dog grooming business at the entrance to Penzance, said the parking bays outside the store had been unavailable since the work began.

She said: "I have a lot of elderly clients so unfortunately I've had quite a few cancellations because they just haven't got the access to the shop.

"We were told it would be finished in time for Christmas but now they say March but I don't even think it will be done by the Easter holidays," she added.

Mushka Crossman closed her shop for several weeks at the height of the disruption

The road outside Mushka Crossman's bakery has been subject to the roadworks since July.

She said: "We actually closed for a few weeks at the height of the works, it's so disruptive and it just makes the whole street look a mess.

Ms Crossman added: "Finding out the work won't be finished till March is not what we need."

The project is part of the Penzance Town Deal Sustainable Travel Programme which aims to "transform travel in and around the town, creating a fully sustainable network of safe and accessible walking, cycling and functional green and open urban spaces", according to the council.

Some delays to the project have been caused by supply chain problems with granite according to the Town Deal Fund.

Vehicles are are now allowed to use the main street before 11:00 GMT and after 16:00 GMT
