Police have named a man found dead in a flat as a murder investigation continues.

Leicestershire Police said it was called at 11:46 GMT on Tuesday to a flat in George Toon Court, off Brook Street in Syston, where a 49-year-old man was found unresponsive.

Police believe Simon Geary, who was pronounced dead at the scene, had been assaulted inside the flat.

Officers confirmed a 49-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder and said he was currently in police custody. It added officers believed the two men were known to each other.

In a statement released by police on Wednesday, Mr Geary's family described him as a "kind, caring soul", adding: "Simon was a much-loved son and brother.

"The support he has given our family will never be forgotten.

"He was a kind caring soul who served his country in the Army and we are so proud of what he achieved in his career.

"We would ask the public to please respect our privacy at this very difficult time."

Police are continuing to carry out inquiries, which has included speaking to residents and examining CCTV to establish the movements of the man prior to his death.

Det Insp Kevin Hames, senior investigating officer, said: "Officers will remain in the area over the coming days to carry out further enquiries and establish what happened.

"This includes examining CCTV and speaking to residents in the area.

"Though I know people will be spending time with loved ones over the coming days, if you have any information that could help us, please do come forward."
