Properties were evacuated after the gas leak was discovered

Several properties had to be evacuated after a gas leak was discovered in a town centre.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service were called to the leak in Park Street in Trowbridge at 11:06 GMT on Friday.

On arrival, firefighters evacuated surrounding properties as a precaution.

The fire service said the leak was isolated at about 13:55 GMT, and its crews left shortly after, with residents now being allowed back into their homes.

Wales & West Utilities Gas Emergency Service Manager for Trowbridge, Josh Williams-Trim, said: "We were alerted to reports of a gas leak in the Park Street area of Trowbridge this morning and immediately sent engineers to the scene.

"As a precaution, the emergency services closed Park Street at its junctions with Frome Road and Wesley Road, and evacuated nearby properties.

"Our engineers are now working as safely and as quickly as possible to make a permanent repair.

"To do this safely, we will need to keep the road closure in place while we work; however, we are now in the process of allowing people back into their homes following our safety checks.

"Though it is important that we fix this leak now, it is being constantly monitored and does not pose a wider safety risk. There has been no impact on local gas supplies."
