Double yellow line plan to keep cars off verges
Getty ImagesDouble yellow lines are to be added to a road in Sheffield in an effort to improve safety for pedestrians.
The parking restrictions will be introduced on Herries Road, either side of the Parkwood Road North junction.
A council report said the move would stop people parking on grass verges near the intersection, helping to improve visibility and make it easier for people using the nearby bus stop.
Sheffield City Council's transport, regeneration and climate policy committee approved the proposal at a meeting last week.
Councillors heard that four objections had been lodged to the scheme by people who park on the verges outside their homes, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
A report to the committee said: "The formal objections also included that parking on the grass verges is easier than exiting their driveways at busy times of the day.
"Dependents of some of the objectors are blue badge holders and the parking restrictions will affect their parking needs."
Councillors heard that all affected properties have off-street parking for one or more vehicles. Blue badge holders would still be able to use their badges to park on the double yellow lines for a maximum of three hours.
The report revealed the existing practice of parking on the verge had damaged the grass and could be hazardous to pedestrians when there are parked vehicles on the footway.
Councillors also agreed to the removal of two trees to make way for pedestrian refuges. These could not be relocated, so they will be replaced elsewhere by four trees, the report said.
