A man in his 30s has died after he was hit by a police vehicle on an emergency call in south London.

The pedestrian was struck by the marked vehicle on Borough High Street at 00:34 GMT, the Metropolitan Police said.

He was given emergency first aid by officers and treated by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, but died at the scene.

The man's next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, the force said. The Met's Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have also been informed about the crash.

A spokesperson for the IOPC said the watchdog was notified of the incident on Wednesday morning and began an independent investigation at about 04:20 GMT.

"We have sent investigators to attend the scene and the police post incident procedure, to begin gathering evidence," they said.

The Met said cordons were in place around Borough High Street and local traffic was being disrupted.
