Driver who led police on 110mph chase is jailed

A driver who topped 110mph (177km/h) while leading police on a 15-minute chase has been jailed for 14 months.

Alfred Stanley shot off after seeing a police car in Ramsey Heights, near Ramsey in Cambridgeshire, on 5 October.

He swerved in front of cars, drove through red lights and went the wrong way round a roundabout during the pursuit, police said.

The 45-year-old, of Sunnymead, Werrington, Peterborough, admitted a series of driving offences at Peterborough Crown Court and was banned from driving for 45 months.

Det Con Callum Fullwood said Stanley's driving was "extremely dangerous".

The chase came to an end when Stanley finally came to a stop and began ramming into the police car in Lincoln Road, Werrington.

Checks on police systems revealed he was supposed to be serving a driving ban at the time.

Officers found him in possession of bolt croppers and said he had been leaving a building site when the pursuit began.

In court, Stanley pleaded guilty to:

• Dangerous driving
• Driving while disqualified and without a licence
• Damaging property
• Failing to comply with a serious crime prevention order

Det Con Fullwood added: "Not to stop for police was an act of stupidity that could have resulted in a serious collision."
