Man jailed over fatal crash faces deportation

A man jailed for causing the death of a moped rider by dangerous driving could face deportation.

Erald Kamberi, 21, had been pursued by police along London Road in Ware, Hertfordshire, when his Vauxhall Astra struck Phillip Bruce, 34, on 1 August.

Kamberi, of no fixed abode, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and driving without insurance at St Albans Crown Court on Tuesday.

He was jailed for 10 years and told he would be considered for deportation upon release.

Kamberi was also handed a 15-year driving ban and must pass an extended re-test before being allowed back on the road.

Det Sgt Ben Heath said: "Kamberi's reckless actions and lack of thought for others caused the death of a much-loved member of the community.

"His lack of care and callousness was shown in the fact he fled the scene following the collision. I am happy to see him sentenced for a long time."

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct to investigate the police's actions prior to the collision.

In a flurry of tributes after his death, Mr Bruce was described as "big, gentle giant" by his mother Jennifer Dover.
