A man has been arrested after a pedestrian was fatally struck by a van on a busy road in Leicester.

Emergency services were called to Humberstone Road at 07:18 GMT on Thursday after the pedestrian, a man in his 60s, was hit by a blue Volkswagen Transporter.

East Midlands Ambulance Service treated the pedestrian but he was pronounced dead "a short while later", said Leicestershire Police.

A 57-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and remains in custody, a force spokesperson added.

Police said the road was closed in both directions at the junction of Forest Road and Spinney Hill Road, but it had since reopened.

Investigations are ongoing and the force has asked for anyone with information, including dashcam footage, to come forward.
