'Glimpse of heaven' wins stained glass window vote
Carlisle CathedralA cathedral's stained glass window has been named as the "nation's favourite" in a competition organised by the Association of English Cathedrals.
Depicting the life of Jesus, Carlisle Cathedral's east window - which beat 11 other finalists in a public vote - has been described as a "glimpse of heaven" as it reaches up to an ornate ceiling decorated in stars.
To celebrate winning, a new guided tour has been announced called Sacred Light: The Stained Glass of Carlisle Cathedral and which will begin on 21 February.
Michael Everitt, Interim Dean of Carlisle, said he was delighted the window, designed by John Hardman Powell, had won and he hopes "many people will come to see it in person".
The competition aimed to showcase the depth and range of stained-glass artistry and craftsmanship in England's cathedrals from the 12th Century to modern times.
Anna Pitt, executive director of the Association of English Cathedrals said: "The window depicts the life of Jesus, and like much of the stained glass in our Divine Light competition, is a stunning aid to worship, education, discovery, inspiration and spiritual growth in the cathedral."
Carlisle CathedralEveritt said: "The combination of the ancient glass at the top and the wonderful Victorian depictions of Jesus's life, all set beneath our starry ceiling, means you truly get a glimpse of heaven inside the cathedral.
"Thank you to so many people for voting for it and I look forward to welcoming you here."
