The closure will be in place on Thames Street and the bridge from 20:00 - 06:00 each night

A road bridge across the River Thames is set to close for four nights for work to put in new power cables.

Sonning Bridge, near Reading, linking Sonning in Berkshire with Sonning Eye in Oxfordshire will shut overnight from Tuesday until Friday.

The work by Scottish and Southern Power Distribution (SSEN) will see the Grade II listed bridge and a stretch of Thames Street, the B478, either side of the bridge close from 20:00 to 06:00 GMT each night.

Wokingham Borough Council said diversion routes will be place via the A4, central Reading and the A4155.

As with other items, the ATM on the bridge in July 2024 had to come down as the bridge is a listed structure

The arched road bridge, built between 1780-1790, across the river was first listed with Historic England in 1952.

The buttress of the bridge over the River Thames has seen a variety of short-lived mystery additions, including a cash machine, phone, a post box, a urinal and a black front door, complete with a floating doormat.
