Mark Hazle was award the South England's Gritter Driver of the Year

A gritter driver described as the "heartbeat" of his team has been crowned the best in his region.

Mark Hazle, who works for West Northamptonshire Council, has been spreading salt on the county's roads for the past 15 years.

The 53-year-old, from the Northamptonshire village of Guilsborough, was awarded South England's Gritter Driver of the Year award by a highway maintenance vehicle manufacturer.

"Knowing we're keeping people safe every time we go out gritting really is rewarding," he said.

The authority said colleagues described him as "the heartbeat of the west Northamptonshire gritting team".

He also balances his winter maintenance role with serving as an on-call firefighter.

"I love the job and the camaraderie keeps you going through the freezing nights," he said.

Hazle said it was an honour to receive the award and dedicated it to his colleagues at the Brixworth depot and "the whole gritter-driving community".

'Backbone of the community'

Richard Butler, West Northamptonshire Council cabinet member for highways, said: "Residents like Mark are the backbone of our local communities.

"I am delighted his dedication to public services in West Northamptonshire has been recognised."

Allan Rigby from Kier, the highways maintenance contractor for the local authority, added: "Whether he's gritting through the night or responding as a firefighter, his actions show genuine care for the community.

"This recognition is thoroughly deserved and we are incredibly proud of him."
