Woking Borough Council said the order can be enforced by council or police officers

Measures which aim to clampdown on anti-social behaviour in Woking town centre will come into force from 28 October, the local council has said.

Woking Borough Council said the public spaces protection order (PSPO) will set "clear expectations for behaviours" in the town.

The order bans alcohol-related intimidation, threatening or disruptive group behaviour and face coverings used to cause fear or hide the identity of people acting anti-socially.

Councillor Steve Greentree said: "Woking is a safe town and we want to keep it that way."

The council said new signs were being installed to indicate where the order will be applied.

It covers the area between Victoria Road, Chertsey Road, Stanley Road and Heathside Crescent, south of Woking Railway Station, according to a council map.

'Welcoming and safe'

Surrey Police said in an earlier report submitted by the local authority that there had been multiple reports of problems from gatherings in the town, mostly caused by heavy drinking and shoplifting.

Breaking the PSPO could mean being convicted of an offence and receiving a court-ordered fine, the council said.

It will remain in place for three years up to 27 October 2029, unless it is extended, changed or removed.

Greentree added: "As the darker evenings of autumn arrive, these measures will provide additional reassurance and support the ongoing work taking place to keep our vibrant town centre welcoming and safe."
