City centre hotel dropped from redevelopment plan
GooglePlans for a hotel have been dropped from a city centre redevelopment scheme.
Changes to the Prince Bishops Place shopping centre scheme in Durham, which was granted planning permission in July 2024, include replacing the hotel with extra student accommodation.
A public consultation over the revised proposals will now begin.
James Taylor, regional director at developers Citrus Group, said the proposed amendments were "modest" and "a routine part of the development process".
Core parts of the proposals, including 32 shops and a new public square overlooking the River Wear and Elvet Bridge, will be kept.
The existing multi-storey car park will also remain.
The plans were revised after more design work took place.
The previously approved hotel was removed because its "complex" layout around the existing Boots store made it "challenging", the developers said.
The space will instead be used for additional student accommodation, taking the total provision to about 500 rooms.
Other changes include "simplified" roof design and the removal of a previously proposed green wall.
A public drop-in event will take place on Thursday from 17:30 GMT to 20:00 in Unit 10 at Prince Bishops Place.
A new planning application will be submitted to Durham County Council later this month, with a decision expected by the end of the year.
