Up to 620 homes could be built on farmland off Whitmore Road in Newcastle-under-Lyme

Plans to build up to 620 homes on farmland next to a golf club have been submitted.

The development would be built off Whitmore Road on the edge of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, adjacent to Newcastle Golf Club.

The planning application, submitted by Richborough, also includes proposals for a country park, public open space, a play area and allotments.

Work on the first phase of a new link road between the A53 and A525 would also form part of the scheme.

A statement with the plans lodged with Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council said the area had faced a "significant" shortfall in housing land supply.

The homes would be a mixture of one, two, three, four and five-bedroom properties, it added.

About 30 per cent of them would be affordable, which the applicant said would make a "substantial contribution to existing affordable housing needs".
