Proposals have been lodged to build 65 new homes on a patch of green belt land on the edge of Wolverhampton.

The plans will see the creation of the residential properties with vehicle and pedestrian access, drainage features and open space on a 2.97 hectare (7.34 acre) site off Springhill Lane in Lower Penn.

Developers claimed the land - north of Sandhills Day Nursery - did not "strongly contribute to preventing urban sprawl, towns merging, or preserving the setting of historic towns".

A planning statement to South Staffordshire District Council said: "There is a demonstrable unmet need for housing as evident by the council's acute shortfall in housing land supply."

The statement added: "The development will meet the 'golden rules' in respect of 50% affordable housing, improvements to local infrastructure, and provision of open space, and development would not fundamentally undermine the purposes of the remaining green belt across the area of the plan."
