Water safety alert issued for coastline
PA MediaA water safety alert has been issued for a stretch of coastline where large waves are expected.
Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) said rip currents were "likely to be strong" along beaches in North Tyneside until Saturday.
"This year, we have had a number of serious incidents where people have nearly drowned due to being caught in a rip current," a spokesman said.
They added a person also drowned this year at Longsands beach after being pulled out to sea.
"If you do get caught in a rip, try to swim parallel to shore to escape and if you can't do that, 'float to live' and shout for help," TVLB said.
Float to live is a technique taught in emergency water situation. The casualty should float on their back, moving their hands and legs to stay afloat.
HM Coastguard Northumberland also issued a warning to people heading to the coast for New Year's Day swims and dips.
"With a number of New Year's Day dips planned in our region it is important to remember that the sea and coastline can be extremely dangerous," a spokesman said.
They added swimmers should always ensure someone knows where they are and when they expect to return, check weather conditions and tides and have the right equipment.
