A man in his 40s has died after the car he was driving collided with a tanker travelling in the opposite direction.

Police said a silver Vauxhall Meriva heading south on the A2070 Ashford Road in Hamstreet, Kent, collided with a Volvo water tanker at about 15:15 GMT on Tuesday.

The car hit a barrier and the tanker jack-knifed, with the cab then leaving the road and entering a wooded embankment adjacent to the nearby railway line, according to Kent Police.

Officers said the car driver's next of kin had been informed. The tanker driver was taken to hospital for treatment.

The force asked any witnesses or people with footage of the incident to contact them.

National Highways said on Wednesday clear-up works were under way but the road was expected to remain closed "throughout the morning".
