Driver who killed mourner at social club jailed
Lancashire PoliceA driver whose car ploughed into the front of a social club, killing a mourner as she left a funeral wake, has been jailed.
Brian Trevithick, 76, reversed his Vauxhall Crossland X into another vehicle in the car park before accelerating through the entrance of the Greenhill Social and Bowling Club in Burnley on 12 February 2024.
Lynne Harvey, 72, who was in a wheelchair, died from "catastrophic injuries". Aother woman, in her 50s, was seriously injured, Lancashire Police added.
Trevithick had been taking medication which, if disclosed, would have seen his licence revoked. He admitted causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for four years, eight months at Preston Crown Court on Friday.
He also admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Lynne was leaving the wake when she was struck by Trevithick, who had also attended the funeral.
The injured woman has now fully recovered physically, said police.
Lancashire Police said Trevithick had reversed into a parked Ford Fiesta immediately before his car - an automatic - lurched forward into the front of the club.
Trevithick had consumed two non-alcoholic drinks, police said.
His medication - not disclosed to the DVLA - meant he should not have been driving, the force said.
Lancashire PoliceSgt Paul McCurrie said: "Trevithick made a choice not to disclose particular medication he was taking to the DVLA.
"If he had done so, his driving licence would have been revoked, and this tragedy could have been prevented."
In a tribute, Lynn's family said they would miss her forever and would hold "fond memories in our hearts".
They added that she "always looked after, loved, and cared for her children," and "adored her grandchildren".
