National Highways described the incident as "severe"

Traffic has returned to normal after a multiple vehicle crash closed part of the A2 in Kent in the early hours of Sunday.

At about 05:20 GMT, emergency services were called to the eastbound carriageway near Gravesend, between junctions with the A2260 and A227, following what highways officers described as a "serious collision".

According to Kent Fire and Rescue Service, one person had to be attended to by an air ambulance crew.

A spokesperson added that crews also had to cut someone from a vehicle.

National Highways said that the "severity of the incident" required accident investigations to take place, causing the route to remain closed for several hours.

The agency added that a diversion had to be put in place via part of Northfleet.

There is still some congestion in places and traffic remains slow through Ebbsfleet Valley.
