Tom Jones gives blessing to museum mammoth named 'Tom Bones'

Legendary singer Sir Tom Jones has given his seal of approval to the naming of a woolly mammoth in his honour.

"Tom Bones" has taken centre stage at the National Museum Cardiff and has quickly become one of its most photographed exhibits.

More than 18,000 visitors took part in a vote to name the huge 3D model, with "Tom Bones" coming out on top.

After hearing the news, Sir Tom took to social platform X and said: "It's not every day you have an ancient woolly mammoth named after you."

The 85-year-old also encouraged his followers to support "our wonderful museums".

The life-size mammoth has been on display for eight months.

Other possible contenders in the naming stakes included: Bendigeidfran, Tusks, BFM (Big Friendly Mammoth), Sir Tusks-A-Lot and Mammoth McMammoth Face.

Head of the museum, Mared Maggs, said the vote had captured visitors' imagination.

"Tom already feels like a part of the museum family and we're excited to welcome more visitors to come and meet him," she said, of the exhibit.
