Fountains restored after not working for 17 years
Torridge District CouncilQuayside fountains that had not worked for 17 years are up and running again after a £60,000 repair project.
Torridge District Council said the Bideford Fountains, which were installed as part of Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002, had been fully refurbished.
The council said when the fountains stopped operating in 2009, the required work was deemed to be "so highly over-complicated" to carry out.
Councillor Bob Hicks, chairman of the Bideford Harbour Board, said he was proud and delighted to have the "iconic feature" working again.
Money for the project came through the government's Rural England Prosperity Fund with the work including the installation of a new control system that responds to tide levels and wind conditions to prevent spray reaching the quay.
Other work on the structure included new high-efficiency pumps being installed, the refurbishment of valve assemblies and upgrades to decorative lighted at the site.
"No doubt, these fountains will provide a fantastic backdrop to festivals and events in the town, bringing an uplifting and energetic atmosphere to the quay, enhancing this much‑loved public space for residents and visitors alike," Hicks said.
