Nine schemes to contest architecture awards

Jim StephensonA redeveloped railway station and a retrofitted Grade II listed farmstead are among the projects shortlisted for regional architectural awards.
The Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) has announced nine schemes across the West Midlands in the list and said they reflected "the breadth and ambition of architectural practice across the region".
Jury chair for the area Svetlana Solomonova said they showed a "considered and intelligent approach" to working with complex sites and existing buildings.
The winning projects will be announced at a ceremony in the region in May and considered for the national version of the award, to be revealed this summer.
The shortlisted projects are:
- Animal Studies Centre by Cullinan Studio - the mid-20th Century campus building originally marked for demolition with teaching facilities for animal care in Dudley
- Corner Farm Taw by Fitzwilliam Architects - a Grade II listed, 17th Century farmstead in Warwickshire
- Jazz House by Errand Studio - a low-carbon home in Hereford
- Kepax Footbridge by Moxon Architects and Jacobs (Engineering) - a bridge over the River Severn in Worcester
- Malvern Pool House by Klas Hyllen Architecture - an arts and crafts–inspired home in Warwickshire, including a primary pool hall
- The Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Smethwick by HKS, Cagni Williams, Sonnemann Toon
- Staffordshire History Centre by Pringle Richards Sharratt - a lottery-funded centre combining refurbishment and new-build in Stafford
- The Parks by Stolon Studio - eight low-carbon homes near Canon Pyon in Herefordshire
- University Station by Associated Architects, Mott MacDonald, Volker Fitzpatrick - a redeveloped railway station for the University of Birmingham
