A man in his 30s was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being involved in one of two crashes on the A14.

The incidents led to the closure of both carriageways between the Catthorpe interchange and junction two for Kelmarsh, causing significant disruption and miles of queues.

The first crash happened near the A5199 slip road of the eastbound A14 at about 05:20 GMT, Northamptonshire Police said.

At about the same time, National Highways said two lorries and a van were involved in another crash on the eastbound side.

The driver of the van was taken to University Hospital Coventry with life-threatening injuries.

Traffic was unable to join the A14 from the M1 and the M6.

The A14 has since fully reopened.

Northamptonshire Police is appealing for witnesses to both incidents.
