Essential work to improve the safety of a dual carriageway is set to begin.

Bedford Borough Council said new drainage and highway maintenance work would start on the A6, Paula Radcliffe Way, from Monday for about 30 days.

Lane closures will be in place, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from the Sainsbury's roundabout in Bedford to the Thatched Barn by Milton Ernest, it said.

Drivers are being urged to allow extra time for travel and to find alternative routes.

Substantial works were previously carried out on the stretch two years ago.

This time around, work will be undertaken to maintain effective surface water management, improve road safety and ensure the road's "long-term integrity", the authority said.

It will include the replacement of sumpless gullies, clearance of kerb channels, and vegetation clearance at silting basins.

"By proactively maintaining the drainage system and highway infrastructure, the council aims to reduce the risk of surface water issues, support smoother journeys, and protect this strategic corridor for the future," a spokesperson said.

Independent councillor Nicola Gribble, portfolio holder for environment, said: "Keeping our key routes in good condition is vital for safety and for keeping Bedford Borough moving.

"These drainage and maintenance works on Paula Radcliffe Way will help manage surface water, protect the road structure, and support safer journeys for all road users.

"We know roadworks can be frustrating and are very grateful for drivers' patience and cooperation while this important programme is carried out."
