A 17-year-old girl has died after a crash which closed part of the A19.

Police were called to the northbound carriageway, at Seaton near the turn-off for Sunderland, at about 23:00 GMT on Monday.

A yellow Vauxhall Corsa left the carriageway and was involved in a collision before catching fire, Northumbria Police said.

The 17-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The 19-year-old male driver was taken to hospital where he is in a critical condition.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact the force.

A section of the carriageway which was closed between the junctions for the B1404, close to Seaham, and the A690 Herrington Interchange, reopened around 09:50 GMT.

Motorists faced lengthy delays, with National Highways working to clear up the scene with diversions in place.
