Nottingham City Council said there are "no easy answers to the level of demand for parking in most neighbourhood high streets"

Proposals to bring in parking permits for residents in part of Nottingham have been dropped by the city council.

After receiving "a high number of complaints" about parking in Sherwood, Nottingham City Council said it carried out a consultation process to look at potential solutions.

Business owners and residents raised concerns about the possible permits, which the authority said it had taken into account.

It is now looking at other ideas to address what it has described as a "longstanding issue".

Linda Woodings, the council's executive member for regional development, growth and transport, said: "It was clear that the proposal did not carry a majority of support from residents in the affected streets, and further concerns were raised about the impact on local businesses as well as the potential for the problems to be moved on to roads just outside the permit zones.

"There are unfortunately no easy answers to the level of demand for parking in most neighbourhood high streets, which can outstrip the available street space and local car parks.

"There were some alternative suggestions put forward for regulating our car parks in Sherwood, and the council will monitor that situation over the coming months.

"Should any new proposal be taken forward in the future, there would obviously be another consultation before any decision was made."
