A woman in her 40s has died after a crash on a major road in north Wales.

North Wales Police said she had been travelling in a car involved in a crash with a heavy goods vehicle on the A55 near Conwy, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two others were airlifted to hospitals in Stoke and Aintree with serious injuries, while a third person was taken by ambulance to Aintree. All four were travelling in the car.

The force said it was called at about noon on Thursday to junction 17 westbound in Conwy Morfa, under the A547 overpass.

It said the road was closed in both directions between Penmaenmawr Tunnel and Conwy Tunnel.

It has since reopened in both directions but part of the westbound carriageway is down to one lane.

Ch Insp Trystan Bevan said: "I share my deepest condolences with the woman's family at this incredibly difficult time, and my thoughts are with all the others involved in this collision."

Three Wales Air Ambulance helicopters were sent, as were four ambulances and two other response units. Four off-duty paramedics helped.

Firefighters also attended, with the A55 Conwy Tunnel closed in both directions.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
