Shropshire Council said the schemes would help children keep healthy

Money is being given to 15 schools to help children cycle, scoot or walk to school.

Shropshire Council will use £13,710 to pay for items including bike racks, bikes, scooters and helmets, along with funding scooter training and bike maintenance lessons.

The cash is part of £30,000 they had from Active Travel England - in July, the authority used £16,176 from the total towards 18 schools for similar proposals.

Councillor Rob Wilson said the funding would help children stay fit and cut the number travelling to school by car.

The latest round of funding will allow seven of the 15 schools to get new bike storage or improve their existing bike racks.

There will also be seven schools getting balance bikes, six getting cycle helmets, three getting scooters, three getting cycling or scooting lessons and four getting high visibility vests.

Of the other plans:

  • One school, Bryn Offa Primary School, will offer skateboard sessions
  • Clive Primary School will put on 'Dr Bike' maintenance sessions
  • Bishop Hooper Primary School plans to put out road safety pavement signs
