A Herefordshire pupil referral unit has closed for a week following a fire on neighbouring land.

The blaze started on grounds next to St David's Centre in Hereford on 5 September.

The council said, after a health and safety meeting on Monday to discuss the damage, it was decided the centre would shut until Friday .

The closure would be reviewed on Thursday and further communication issued the following day, it added. Parents and carers were being contacted on Tuesday by their child's tutor.

St David's, off Coningsby Street in the centre of Hereford, has pupils aged 14 to 16 from Year 10 and 11.

Herefordshire Pupil Referral Service said on its website everybody "in the St. David's community is respected and treated as an individual".

It added pupils were given academic and vocational opportunities and encouraged to "reflect on their behaviour and gain a better understanding of themselves".
