A crematorium is to open a new area for families in Lancashire to give their "really precious pets a nice send-off", a councillor has said.

Blackpool Council has agreed to the plans for Carleton Crematorium in Poulton-le-Fylde as part of a £663,000 project to replace outdated facilities and construct a new yard.

Councillor Jane Hugo, deputy leader and cabinet member for climate change, told BBC Radio Lancashire pets "are a really precious part of the family and people want to give them a nice send-off".

A council spokesperson said there could be high demand for the facility as the nearest pet crematorium was a 30 minute drive away.

Councillors on the authority's executive committee ratified the move after considering a detailed report on the overall proposals.

Chairing the meeting, councillor Lynn Williams, leader of Blackpool Council, said: "There has been some positive feedback about the pet crematorium already.

"I imagine there will be a big take-up of people wanting to send their pets off there."

A report to the committee said it would be funded through prudential borrowing, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
