Drivers urged to display Blue Badges and permits
Getty ImagesBlue Badge and parking permit holders are being urged to ensure they clearly display them as a new car park camera system is introduced.
Surrey's Runnymede council said its new system is in place in car parks at Memorial Gardens in Virginia Water, Woodlands in Chertsey, Chertsey Library and Waspe Farm, in Egham.
The camera system uses number-plate recognition to identify which vehicles enter car parks, have paid for parking and are displaying a ticket or have paid by the parking app RingGo.
Parking permits and blue badges are not recognised electronically so must be displayed, the council warns.
The system captures registration numbers, but does not automatically detect whether a vehicle is exempt.
A council spokesperson said: "Those who don't pay at the kiosk or use RingGo are likely to receive a penalty charge notice."
The council has reached agreements with schools where a car park is used for drop-offs and pickups, but said: "Parents must display their parking permit."
The spokesperson added: "Parking charges themselves will not change, and the revenue will continue to be reinvested in maintaining the borough's parking facilities, to ensure they are well-maintained."
