A man has been arrested after a lorry collided with two pedestrians, leaving one trapped underneath, on a main route through Southampton city centre.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said officers were called to Town Quay shortly after 10:45 BST following the incident between a lorry and a man and a woman in their 60s.

Police said the man had suffered life-threatening injuries for which he was now undergoing treatment, whilst the woman had been taken to hospital as a precaution.

A 69-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving in connection with the incident and remained in custody, the force added.

Earlier on Friday, a spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service said: "The incident involved a patient trapped under a lorry.

"We attended with one ambulance crew and the air ambulance service also attended."

Emergency services remain on the scene, with the busy route remaining closed westbound pending the recovery of the lorry.

Red Funnel warned customers that its nearby vehicle service between Southampton and East Cowes had partially reopened, after being affected by the closure.

Neil Chapman, operations director at Red Funnel, said: "Customers travelling with their vehicles, including freight, can now access our Southampton terminal and yard for boarding."

"Some delays are expected as operations return to normal and we advise customers travelling to Southampton to allow additional time for their journey, check local traffic reports and visit our website for the latest timetable updates," he added.
