Hundreds of homes are set to be built in Leicester after the third phase of an ongoing construction scheme was approved.

Leicester City Council said up to 3,000 homes are set to be built at Ashton Green, near Beaumont Leys, as part of work being carried out by developers Morris Homes.

The first 100 houses at Ashton Green were built in 2020, with a second phase adding another 307 properties, and the recently-approved third part set to add another 441.

Morris Homes said the plans were "a landmark scheme for Leicester".

The city council, which is the principal owner of the 320-acre greenfield site, said construction on the third phase was expected to get under way "by late spring".

It added a fourth phase, which is slated to create another 570 homes, "is currently being developed", while up to 30% of the new properties "will be affordable homes for rent or shared ownership".

City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: "Ashton Green is an essential part of the our commitment to meeting the growing and urgent need for new homes in Leicester over the next 10-15 years and it will make a huge contribution to local economic growth."
