Padel + Play has a club in Worcester, with plans to expand to Telford and other locations in the West Midlands

A Worcester-based padel club has lodged a planning application to turn a commercial unit into an indoor court.

Padel + Play wants the 2,957 sq m unit at Halesfield Point to have six courts, changing rooms, as well as a cafe, reception and shop area.

It would create six full-time jobs and five part-time jobs, Telford and Wrekin Council planners were told.

There would be 47 dedicated parking spaces, with a maximum of 22 players playing at one time, the plans said.

A period of public consultation has been opened into the submission.

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) says the sport, which combines elements of tennis and squash, is the fastest-growing sport in the world.

Planning agent Berrys of Hereford told planners that the premises had been marketed for 18 months with "limited interest."

"The buildings lend themselves for this use as there is good car parking onsite and the buildings only require minor internal alterations," they said.

"Furthermore, the site is located close to Madeley District Centre and given its location within Halesfield Industrial Estate is already well served by existing public transport."

Padel + Play currently has an established club in Worcester, with a site being readied in Stratford-upon-Avon.

It also has plans for clubs in Burntwood, Staffordshire, and Hereford - subject to planning approval.
