Northumbria Police said Steven Snowdon's death was not being treated as suspicious

Human remains have been identified as those of a teenager missing for several months.

Northumbria Police said forensic analysis confirmed the remains found off Mulberry Way in Houghton-le-Spring on 17 February were those of missing 19-year-old Steven Snowdon.

The Sunderland teenager was last seen on 27 August and last spoken to on the phone two days later.

The force said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

Det Insp Nick Went, of the force's missing investigation team, said a file would be passed on to the coroner.

"This is an extremely sad conclusion to the search for Steven and our thoughts are firmly with his family and friends at this devastating time."
