A man who stabbed another man in the chest after he forced entry into a house has been jailed for 18 years.

Sean Derbyshire, 40, attacked his victim after he smashed a patio door at a property on Danes Crest in Brompton, near Northallerton, at about 08:00 GMT on 30 December 2024.

Derbyshire, of Rectory Lane in Guisborough, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and attempted robbery on the fourth day of his trial at Teesside Crown Court.

He was sentenced at the same court earlier.

The victim was "incredibly lucky to be alive" following the attack, a North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.

Police arrested Derbyshire in Great Ayton on the day of the attack

Before the incident, Derbyshire had turned up at the home where the victim was watching television, according to police.

After being allowed inside, he punched the man and demanded money, but was removed by other people who were at the property at the time.

However, he returned two hours later and stabbed the victim, officers said.

Det Con Hannah Kelly described Derbyshire as an "extremely dangerous individual" who had carried out "a vicious and unprovoked attack".

She said: "His actions posed a serious risk to the public and caused significant concern among residents, including families with young children.

"The victim sustained multiple injuries, including a stab wound to the chest.

"He is incredibly lucky to be alive, this could easily have had a far more tragic outcome."
