The Grade II listed Portland stone structure was knocked down on Monday

A Grade II listed stone gateway into London's Battersea Park has been knocked over and broken.

The Portland stone structure on the north-west entrance to the park on Albert Bridge Road was damaged on Monday by a truck, said Friends of Battersea Park.

The stonework, which dated back to 1891, was seen broken on the floor with its wrought iron gate lying on the side of the road.

Enable, a not-for-profit organisation that looks after the Victorian park in the Wandsworth borough, was contacted for comment.

Charity Friends of Battersea Park posted about the crash on social media, and said: "This happened today - please be careful as you pass by."
