An investigation has been launched after a young person was struck and fatally injured by a train at a level crossing.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said it happened at Bottesford railway crossing in Leicestershire at about 12:00 GMT on 25 January.

On Friday, the RAIB said it hoped to determine what happened in the run-up to the fatal incident, the site's history of accidents, and any risk factors associated with the crossing.

A spokesperson added: "We will publish our findings, including any recommendations to improve safety, at the conclusion of our investigation."

The crossing, next to Bottesford station, connects two residential areas off Station Road and Sutton Close.

According to the RAIB - the UK's independent railway investigation organisation - the crossing is gated on either side of the railway and has signage in place.
