Stargazers in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire were treated to a rare display of northern lights on Wednesday night.

Members of the public shared pictures of the colourful lights display over homes and landmarks in the region.

Also known as the aurora borealis, the natural phenomenon appears as large areas of colour caused by solar particles from the sun colliding with the earth's upper atmosphere.

According to the UK Met Office, the northern lights are best witnessed in Scotland, northern England, north Wales and Northern Ireland. However, under severe space weather conditions, the lights can be seen throughout the UK.

To see the aurora, it is best to find a dark spot with minimal light pollution and a good view of the northern horizon. The vibrant aurora colours are often more clearly viewed through a camera lens.
